Barbie Flagship Store

Back to overview
DERECO Impuls 4

The first flagship store for Barbie was the Barbie House built for Mattel in Shanghai by the New York firm Slade Architecture. Mattel wanted a shop where Barbie comes out as a HEROINE. The intention was to develop Barbie as a global lifestyle brand in the context of Barbie’s historic association with fashion. BIG, Ogilvy & Mather’s brand and design division, was Slade Architecture’s creative partner.

Barbie House covers a shopfloor surface of 35,000 sqm and boasts the world’s largest Barbie doll collection and a wide range of services for fans and families. The tonality inside the house is an uncompromisingly feminine interpretation of Barbie – everything is smooth and shiny, it’s all about entertainment and fashion. Visitors are welcomed by curved, shimmering surfaces in a lobby where a pink lift takes them from the hectic world outside to the two Barbie floors with designer dolls, Barbie accessories, dresses, books and much more. A spiral staircase over three levels surrounded by 800 Barbie dolls forms a dominating centrepiece; Barbie makes the world go round. You can readily explore the other floors from here, first of all the Women’s Floor with fashion, cosmetics and accessories. In a Design Center, girls can create their own Barbie doll with a personal look. Then there’s a Girl’s Floor with fashion, shoes and accessories where girls can take to the catwalk in a real fashion show. The package is completed by Barbie’s Café at the top level.

Away from the shopfloor, Slade Architecture have played with relationships between dolls, girls and women. As a result, the surroundings have a perfectly girlish feel to them that knows no age. Fiction blends with reality – imagination, fun and optimism are the order of the day. Barbie’s attributes in condensed form to deliver one great experience.

The Barbie House façade was developed on the basis of various factors including the product, the packaging design, Barbie’s role as a fashion icon and architectural iconography. With two layers of translucent carbonate inside and flat glazing on the outer façade, printed with quirky fishnet patterns, Barbie House has a unique, unmistakable identity.
